HVAC units integral to reducing running costs for iconic Launceston hotel

Housed in a 1960’s building containing four large grain silos, the Peppers Silo Hotel is a new state-of-the-art hotel complex overlooking the idyllic Tamar River Basin and Cataract Gorge in Launceston, Tasmania.

The 35-meter high silos have long been an iconic landmark on the edge of the town.

This post-war heritage building has now been reimagined into a sophisticated 9-storey hotel compete with function and entertainment facilities, offering sweeping views over the meandering Tamar river.

Designed within the original silos, the hotel complex includes the addition of a brand-new North tower, providing a contemporary contrast and adding character to the hotel.

Armcor supplied three packaged air-conditioning energy recovery ventilator (ERV) units to service the iconic hotel’s function centre.

Designed to provide the necessary fresh air while also recovering energy from exhaust air, the great advantage of the units is that heating and cooling is packaged together in one unit, making installation and servicing simple and efficient.

These economy cycle units will provide the bulk of cooling capacity for the function centre, dramatically reducing running costs.

Armcor worked in conjunction with its distributor, HVAC Supplies, to design and deliver these state-of-the-art heat recovery units to this outstanding Tasmanian icon while leading Tasmanian contracting company, Degree C, managed all installation work.

In the past, building owners and facilities managers reduced fresh air levels to save on energy costs at the expense of health. This reduction is no longer necessary due to the increased availability and code requirements for Air to Air Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV). Air to Air Heat Exchangers reduce fresh air ventilation costs by up to 80% by using energy from building exhaust air. In addition to lowering operating expenses, ERV’s help control humidity and often pay for themselves by lowering heating and air conditioning capital equipment costs.
Without an energy recovery solution in place, air that is treated for temperature and humidity will simply leave a building. The work that has already been done to heat, cool, humidify or dehumidify the space will need to be repeated for the incoming fresh air multiple times per hour. Implementing an ERV solution helps building owners meet ventilation code, lower operating costs, and improve indoor air quality.

Humidity
On warm humid days, humidity contained in fresh outdoor air often overpowers the air conditioning system and creates a challenge for facility managers to keep tenants comfortable. If humidity is a concern, select an energy recovery ventilator that utilizes an enthalpy transfer media, such as an energy recovery wheel, to overcome this challenge. Energy recovery wheels remove up to 80 percent of the humidity from the fresh air before it contacts the air conditioning coil; the result is air that is cool, comfortably dry, and does not contribute to the formation of mould and mildew.

Productivity
According to the EPA, a school’s indoor environment can have a significant impact on children’s learning and productivity. Studies have shown links between poor IAQ and children’s health problems, reduced performance scores and increased absenteeism. Similarly, the productivity of a company’s workforce is dramatically impacted when forced to work in a less-than-ideal environment. ERV’s deliver affordable fresh air to ensure a healthy and productive environment without the energy penalty historically attributed to fresh air.

Health
With half of all illnesses attributable to indoor airborne contaminants, the EPA has declared IAQ a public health priority. Federal, state, and local building codes have followed suit in mandating minimum outdoor air ventilation rates based upon the size and function of buildings. ERV is the only ventilation strategy that can simultaneously reduce the levels of all indoor pollutants for health and reduce the size and operating cost of the HVAC system.

Cost Savings
It is important to note that including an ERV in your HVAC design provides substantial savings, both up front and over time. A facility manager can expect minimal or no added first cost to installing an ERV in a retrofit or new construction project. Additionally, first cost may be offset with energy recovery incentives offered by many utilities and local, state, and federal governments.

We can argue all day about climate change, but one thing for sure is that we do experience both ends of the spectrum.

Climate change has the wonderful capacity to make things hotter and colder simultaneously, with the strangest of results.

As temperatures plunge in the US, frozen sharks have washed ashore after drowning with frozen water in their gills and in southern Florida, iguanas have fallen out of palm trees frozen solid.

In Sydney it has been a similar story but opposite. As temperatures soared to 47.3C hundreds of bats fell out of trees, dead and cooked alive.

At the end of the day, the weather is still the weather and will remain the topic of conversation.

Stuck in the middle, we humans are adopting a preference for regulated temperatures in every indoor setting, whether at home, work, shopping or relaxing.

The requirements for indoor comfort are increasing and with the increasing energy costs this is requiring an even greater requirement for energy recovery.Don’t be caught short by the next heat or cold wave – either or both may be on your doorstep.

Data centres are the hub of every on-line transaction and communication, but although the consumer expects the best, this service is not automatic or without meticulous background operational control.
Data centres full of sophisticated equipment need management. The two vital ingredients that cannot be compromised are an uninterrupted power supply, and an effective climate control.
Power supply is obviously imperative. The climate control may be a more subtle but it is equally a problematic concern. Fortunately equipment today can withstand a greater variance in operating temperatures, but conversely they emit greater heat output because of their compactness.
Climate control needs the careful consideration of the equipment heat loads and ambient temperature fluctuations, humidity control, the effective air distribution patterns, the introduction of fresh air for maintenance personnel, and backup systems.
The larger data centres are now opting for quality systems that will last the distance. Long gone is the cheap options that are short lived and then let the customer down in the peak load. The risk analysis requires airconditioning systems that are well designed and reliable to avoid outage and downtime.
