Data centres are the hub of every on-line transaction and communication, but although the consumer expects the best, this service is not automatic or without meticulous background operational control.
Data centres full of sophisticated equipment need management. The two vital ingredients that cannot be compromised are an uninterrupted power supply, and an effective climate control.
Power supply is obviously imperative. The climate control may be a more subtle but it is equally a problematic concern. Fortunately equipment today can withstand a greater variance in operating temperatures, but conversely they emit greater heat output because of their compactness.
Climate control needs the careful consideration of the equipment heat loads and ambient temperature fluctuations, humidity control, the effective air distribution patterns, the introduction of fresh air for maintenance personnel, and backup systems.
The larger data centres are now opting for quality systems that will last the distance. Long gone is the cheap options that are short lived and then let the customer down in the peak load. The risk analysis requires airconditioning systems that are well designed and reliable to avoid outage and downtime.

Indoor pool facilities and spa rooms are on the increase. Life style resorts, hotels, function centres and hydrotherapy applications are all incorporating indoor pools.
The indoor air quality design needs specific attention to provide enjoyment for the user and protection for the building from the harmful effects of chemical laden condensation.

Effective and efficient cooling is a critical component of a data centre infrastructure, and multiple options are available to maintain the temperatures within the imperative parameters to keep the electronic equipment operating.
IT equipment consumes electricity and leaves behind heat as a by-product. This heat, if not treated successfully, will build up to the point where sensitive equipment is damaged or destroyed. Thus the need is to somehow remove the heat.
Moving heat requires energy, so that it costs money in both capital and operational expenses. As companies seek to control the power consumption of data centres, cooling is a major target. Herein lies the move toward cooling that incorporates energy recovery which tends to require less energy and infrastructure than more-traditional cooling methods.
Air distribution patterns are important and the ‘raised floor’ or ‘hot aisles and cold aisle’ designs are the most common ways to effectively ensure an effective and efficient ventilation pattern.

According to an article published by ‘The Australian’ today soaring electricity and gas prices are expected to clip 5-14% from pre-tax profits of companies ranging from Woolworths to Wesfarmers and Inghams to NextDC.
They quote Craig Woolford saying, “For most Australian-based companies, we expect the impact will likely be felt over 2017-18 and 2018-19, as most companies will have two or three-year contracts.”
